Environmental Monitoring

Soil, Rock & Site Investigations

Before you build, excavate, or design structural foundations in North Queensland, you need precise, reliable data about what lies beneath the surface. Failing to identify unstable clay, loose sand, or shallow rock tables can lead to catastrophic structural failures and massive cost blowouts down the line.

At Henry’s Drilling, we provide high-quality, professional geotechnical drilling and environmental site investigation services. We help structural engineers, developers, civil contractors, and home builders get the accurate subterranean data they need to build with absolute confidence.

Our Geotechnical Drilling Services

We offer a versatile range of site investigation capabilities tailored to meet residential, commercial, and infrastructure needs:

Residential Soil Testing & Site Classification

Building a new home or extending an existing one? We drill the precise boreholes required by soil technicians to determine your site classification (Class A to Class P) under Australian Standard AS 2870, helping your engineer design the perfect concrete slab.

Commercial & Structural Investigations

For multi-story buildings, commercial warehouses, and heavy infrastructure, we drill deep boreholes to identify load-bearing capacities, rock-depth profiles, and groundwater tables, ensuring your structural footings or screw piles are engineered correctly.

Civil, Roadway & Infrastructure Projects

We assist local government and civil contractors with alignment investigations, pavement core sampling, slope stability analysis, and utility path clearing across the wider Townsville region.

Environmental Sampling & Monitoring Wells

If you are developing a brownfield site or require contamination testing, we can drill and install environmental monitoring wells to track groundwater quality and soil contamination levels safely.

Why Choose Henry's Drilling?

If you are a Townsville local, you likely already know Robert Henry. As the owner and operator of Henry’s Landcare, Henry’s Pools, and now Henry’s Drilling.

Operating in the local construction and landscaping industry means we understand the critical importance of solid foundations.

Our geotechnical division brings that same local dedication and standard of excellence to every site:

Decades of Local Earthwork Experience

Having worked extensively on Townsville pools and landscape design, we have hands-on experience with the region’s complex soil profiles—from the highly reactive clay soils of the outer suburbs to the shifting sands of the northern beaches.

State-of-the-Art Core Sampling

We utilise modern drilling rigs capable of extracting pristine, undisturbed soil and rock core samples even in difficult-to-access terrains.

Comprehensive Safety & Compliance

We prioritise site safety above all else. Our team operates under strict Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), holds all required tickets, and carries comprehensive public liability insurance.

Seamless Project Integration

We work directly with your chosen structural or geotechnical engineers, delivering clean bore logs and intact physical samples strictly packaged and ready for laboratory analysis.

Our Step-by-Step Geotechnical Drilling Process

We follow a rigorous, methodical process to guarantee data accuracy and site safety:

  1. DBYD & Utility Location: Before our rigs touch the ground, we conduct exhaustive Dial Before You Dig (DBYD) checks and site scans to protect underground utility assets.
  2. Rigid Rig Setup: We position our compact, high-torque drilling rigs on the specified GPS borehole coordinates, ensuring minimal disturbance to the surrounding property.
  3. Soil & Rock Core Sampling: We use auger drilling, wash boring, or rotary diamond coring to retrieve high-quality, continuous samples of the soil and rock layers.
  4. In-Situ Testing (SPT / DCP): Where required, we perform Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) or Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests directly inside the borehole to measure the soil’s physical resistance.
  5. Backfilling & Site Remediation: Once the logs are complete and the samples are secured, we backfill the boreholes safely and restore the site surface to its original condition.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between geotechnical drilling and water bore drilling?

While water bore drilling is designed to extract water, geotechnical drilling is done to extract information.

We drill relatively narrow, shallow boreholes to pull up intact soil and rock core samples so engineers can test their physical properties, load capacity, and stability.

For a standard residential house slab, boreholes typically only need to go down 1.5 to 3 metres.

For larger commercial structures, bridges, or retaining walls, we may drill anywhere from 5 to 20+ metres down to find competent bedrock.

Many areas of Townsville contain highly reactive clay. These soils act like a sponge, swelling significantly when wet during our summer monsoon season and shrinking heavily during the dry winter.

Geotechnical drilling identifies these reactive zones so engineers can design foundations that won’t crack or move as the seasons change.

Yes! Alongside our heavy-duty gear, we operate compact, manoeuvrable drilling rigs specifically designed to squeeze through tight side gates, under low carports, and work in confined residential backyards without destroying your existing gardens.
